Region 1 of the Australian Soo Bahk Do Moo Duk Kwan Federation covers all of Australia's Northern Territory. The first Do Jang was opened by Master Chris Austin at Rapid Creek Primary School in 1982 under the guidance of Master KS Shin. In 1985, the Australian Association fragmented when Master Shin broke away from Kwan Jang Nim Hwang Kee, the founder of the Moo Duk Kwan. Master Chris Austin remained loyal to the Kwan Jang Nim and in 1987 formed the Australian Federation.
In 1997 Master Chris Austin retired from his role as President of the Australian Federation and his son, Michael Austin Sa Bom Nim took over this position, as well as the running of the Nightcliff Do Jang (formerly Rapid Creek Do Jang) - Austin Martial Arts.
